The journey of EU is a remarkable one. It’s astonishing to see that the nations which were fiercely involved in belligerence against each other for more than a century can unite to form an association guarding ‘mutual interests’.

What started as a sectored partnership is today a full fledged institution having many supranational characteristics, challenging national sovereignty.

There have been many setbacks to the integration process of EU in the past and in the present too. The very recent one was the failure of the European States to ratify the constitution. But the organization didn’t stop. It kept looking for ways and means to cooperate in various facets.

Today they even have a common currency! Organizations like SAARC should learn a couple of lessons from the EU.
